Residency in Turkish Law

Updated: Jan 17, 2023

The laws regarding residency in Turkey are governed by the Foreigners and International Protection Law (Law No. 6458) and the Regulation on Residence and Travel of Foreigners (Regulation No. 7223).

According to these laws, foreign nationals who wish to reside in Turkey must obtain a residence permit. There are several types of residence permits available, including:

  • Short-term residence permit: This permit is valid for up to 1 year and is intended for those who will be staying in Turkey for less than 6 months.

  • Long-term residence permit: This permit is valid for up to 2 years and is intended for those who will be staying in Turkey for more than 6 months.

  • Student residence permit: This permit is intended for foreign students studying in Turkey.

  • Work residence permit: This permit is intended for foreign nationals who will be working in Turkey.

To apply for a residence permit, foreign nationals must provide certain documents, including a valid passport, proof of income, and a valid health insurance policy. They must also submit the application in person at a local police station.

Once a residence permit is granted, foreign nationals are required to renew it every year. They must also notify the authorities of any changes in their personal information or circumstances, such as a change of address or employment. Foreign nationals who violate the laws regarding residency in Turkey may face penalties, including fines, deportation, and/or a ban on re-entering the country.
